Welcome to Old Fashioned Milk Paint's UK Website
Environmentally friendly, non-toxic (no VOCs), baby-safe, food-safe & biodegradable furniture paint
Old Fashioned Milk Paint is the faithful recreation of an ancient homemade paint formula, containing just milk protein (casein), lime, clay and natural earth pigments. Beloved of woodworkers, furniture restorers, interior designers, artisans and upcyclers, it is used as an authentic period finish in the restoration or reproduction of furniture or other wood projects, to achieve vintage colour in a flat finish. When applied to a porous surface such as wood, milk paint will never chip or peel. It is also naturally mould resistant. Milk paint provides a completely breathable coating and is ideal for painting wood, driftwood, plaster and a variety of other surfaces.
With our Extra Bond Agent you can use Milk Paint on non-porous surfaces too, such as previously painted or varnished furniture. Without the Extra Bond, Milk Paint will resist some pre-finished or pre-painted surfaces to achieve an authentic “chippy” look. Similarly, 'controlled' distressing can be achieved on porous surfaces by applying wax in small areas prior to painting, or simply sanding back where natural wear would occur, to reveal the wood beneath.
The Original Milk Paint ~ 20 Historic Colours
Old Fashioned Milk Paint comes in twenty historic base colours, but many more can be easily achieved, by mixing the powder together or lightening with Snow White (see our Colour Pallet & Tinting Chart for some of the options).
Home-made Milk Paint was heavily used by settlers in North America, and has come to epitomise the character and style of Early American and Colonial furniture and buildings. The texture and deep, rich colours of Old Fashioned Milk Paint were recreated from pieces of furniture found in museums like Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, New York's Metropolitan Museum and restored Shaker villages such as Old Sturbridge, using only natural earth pigments such as ochre, umber and iron oxide.
NEW! Safepaint for Walls
SafePaint is a newly formulated milk paint designed for use on walls. Our original formula was created for porous surfaces like wood and masonry. SafePaint was formulated for use on non-porous surfaces such as previously painted walls, prior finished wood, metal etc. You can certainly use it on porous surfaces like bare wood as well.
Safepaint still has the flat finish, but is much more uniform and consistent over a large area than the original formula. It is also more water resistant, but on surfaces expected to take a lot of abuse you may want to put a clear sealer over the paint. SafePaint is washable once cured.
It is easily mixed, especially at higher speeds with a drill paint paddle or a portable kitchen beater.
