Welcome to Old Fashioned Milk Paint UK
Old Fashioned Milk Paint is the faithful recreation of an ancient homemade paint formula, containing just milk protein (casein), lime and natural earth or mineral pigments, making it environmentally friendly, non-toxic, VOC-free, baby-safe, food-safe & biodegradable.
Beloved of woodworkers, furniture restorers, interior designers, artists and upcyclers, it is used as an authentic period finish in the restoration or reproduction of furniture or other wood projects, to achieve vintage colour in a flat, chalky finish, quite unlike any other paint.
When applied to a porous surface such as wood, driftwood or plaster, milk paint provides a breathable coating that will never chip or peel. It is also anti-bacterial and naturally mould resistant. With our Extra Bond Agent you can use Milk Paint on non-porous surfaces too, such as previously painted or varnished furniture. Without the Extra Bond, Milk Paint will resist some pre-finished or pre-painted surfaces to achieve an authentic “chippy” look.
The Original Milk Paint ~ 20 Historic Colours
Old Fashioned Milk Paint comes in twenty historic base colours, but many more can be easily achieved, by mixing the powder together or lightening with Snow White (see our Colour Pallet & Tinting Chart for some of the options).
Home-made Milk Paint was heavily used by settlers in North America, and has come to epitomise the character and style of Early American and Colonial furniture and buildings. The texture and deep, rich colours of Old Fashioned Milk Paint were recreated from pieces of furniture found in museums like Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, New York's Metropolitan Museum and restored Shaker villages such as Old Sturbridge, using only natural earth pigments such as ochre, umber and iron oxide.
Colour of the Month - Slate
June's Colour of The Month is Slate ~ a real customer favourite. Not a true grey, Slate is really a 'Swedish blue', the sort of blue-grey you would find on an original Gustavian clock.
Slate also works really well layered with other colours, for example over Driftwood or Pitch Black, to create an aged effect. Paint two coats of Slate over the base colour then rub back in patches to expose the colour beneath.
Enjoy 10% Off throughout the month.
NEW! Safepaint for Walls
SafePaint is a newly formulated milk paint designed for use on walls. Our original formula was created for porous surfaces like wood and masonry. SafePaint was formulated for use on non-porous surfaces such as previously painted walls, prior finished wood, metal etc.
Safepaint still has the flat finish, but is much more uniform and consistent over a large area than the original formula. It is also washable once cured. Like original milk paint, SafePaint is made from elements that pre-date the use of petrochemicals and other toxic bases and solvents, it is biodegradable, non-toxic, and odor-free when dry. SafePaint is preferred by those who are chemically sensitive and those sensitive to the need to protect the environment.
